Dinner/Brunch Program

Thank you for your interest in our “Meals from the Heart” Dinner/Brunch Program. The following guidelines were developed to help make your visit to the House a pleasant experience for everyone.

    • Please arrive at your scheduled tour/cooking time. Should you arrive earlier than your scheduled time, you may be asked to wait until your kitchen area is ready for use.


    • Groups are limited to no more than 12 participants, including supervisors. Any group arriving with more than 12 people will be asked to reschedule for another day. This guideline has been carefully adopted to respect the comfort and privacy of the resident families.


    • Youth volunteers must be 16-years old and supervised by an adult. A youth group will not be allowed to cook if they arrive without an adult supervisor.


    • Groups must prepare food on premises. No food can be cooked at home and brought to the House. This rule ensures safety from possible food contamination and is a guideline enforced through Ronald McDonald Charities, which oversees every Ronald McDonald House. Pre-packaged/store-bought food or food prepared by a restaurant may be brought to the House.


    • You are responsible for planning your menu and purchasing the required ingredients.


      • Dinner should include a meat entrée, potato, rice, or pasta side, and vegetable and/or salad. Beef, chicken, turkey and pork entrees, including meatloaf, stew and chili, have all been successful in the past.


      • Brunch may include French toast, eggs, bacon/sausage, quiche, tea sandwiches, muffins, fresh fruit and orange juice, or chicken/tuna salads.


      • Barbecue grills are available in summer months.


    • Important Note: Please do not cook with any nuts, peanut oil, or peanut-based products.


    • Food should be served in disposable aluminum ½ trays provided by the group and covered with plastic wrap or foil. Please do not leave food in pots on the stove.


    • Dinner is served buffet style at 6 p.m.
      Brunch should be set up buffet style by 12 noon. Dinnerware and silverware are available (paper products are optional for seasonal or religious reasons). There is no need to set tables.


    • Coffee, tea and soda are available at the House. Dessert and extra milk donations are always appreciated. If you plan to serve ice cream, please pack in ice to stay frozen for a few hours.


    • The number of residents changes week to week (50-90 people). Please call the House (516-775-5683 x130) to confirm the number of residents before purchasing food to prepare or catering a meal from a restaurant.


    • Participants are required to wear kitchen gloves, provided by RMH-LI. Long hair must be tied back please.


    • Groups are responsible for kitchen cleanup. Dishes and silverware should be loaded in the dishwasher. All pots and pans must be washed by hand and returned to storage. Clean-up should be completed by 7:00 p.m.


    • We welcome the group to take a tour of the House. Please schedule your tour with the Program Director no later than one week prior to your scheduled cooking date.


Please note that residents may be at the hospital with their children while your group is visiting. Families with children in serious condition generally return to the House after 9 p.m., so you should not expect to interact with families. The families truly appreciate coming back to a home-cooked meal, and we save leftovers in our “community refrigerator” so they can enjoy your meal when they return from the hospital. Your Brunch preparation is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Brunch is served at 12 Noon. Clean-up should be completed by 1:00 p.m. House Tour will be at 9:30 a.m., if scheduled.
Your Dinner preparation is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Dinner is served at 6:00 p.m. Clean-up should be completed by 7:00 p.m. House Tour will be at 3:30 p.m., if scheduled.
